Interferometric Calibration gives sub 3um accuracy milling.

To get the very best accuracy achievable from our DMG 50V, CD Measurement Ltd has performed a laser calibration on site in Billingshurst.

This involved the use of a two colour Laser Interferometer made by Agilent (ex HP) , and tracable to NPL's NAMAS standards, to plot the movement of the machining table.

The measurement process under way

By measuring the small errors within the mechanical movements each axis, correcting tables could be introduces to the TNC430 controller which reduce the positional error to below 3u in the X and Y axes and 2u in the Z axis, as the following charts show:

This will allow us to cut THz mirrors and other 3-D components to unprecedented accuray.
